3 Ways to Leave your Nightmare

OMG if you fell for that hook you definitely need therapy! Seriously though, what I'm really talking about is nightmare clients. We've all met them - those  lacking in drive and commitment, or worse, those with vampiresque expectations or too few manners - or arrgh... a monstrous combination of all the above. You don't need it, even if you're on your knees trying to keep the werewolves from the door. You. Don't. Need. It.

OK but yes... When you're on the treadmill, just starting out, or post 2020 recovering, you might think you need these guys, but I've been digging around and unearthed some stuff. I therefore felt it only right to share

3 ways to leave your nightmare...

1. Tell them straight. I knew a doctor once who when bored with a patient would just shout at them until they went elsewhere. Unless you've a captive market (and an exceptional lack of humanity), this method is unwise and would generally be deemed unethical. Still, you can tell a person straight without gaining a blood-curdling reputation. Just do it sensitively, and by this I mean authentically and honestly (but avoid going too heavy on the 'it isn't you, it's me,' thing. In these instances, less tends to be more).

2. What do they say? Some people work, others network (actually, I said that!) You don't always have to be in competition with those in the same industry (more on that another time). In fact, building healthy relationships across the spectrum of what you do can be helpful. By far the best way to offload soul-sucking clients is to therefore recommend someone else. Win-win-win.

3.  Think about your value. Aha, so here we reach the bones of what I've been excavating. Did you know the Isle of Man has some amazing small businesses? Businesses that appear to navigate the haunting seas of commerce with fantastic concepts, reputations, super loyal customers and apparent ease? Better than that, whenever I see their owners they're always smiling. These guys stand as shining examples that you don't need to put up with ghoulish clients. I mean, they might still have a few skeletons, but they're not relying on them for their neeps and tatties, (although yes, they probably have ridiculously good interpersonal skills too). Either way, what can they teach us?

And here, my friend, is where we reach the end of our story, because the truth is, if you want to leave your nightmare client once and for all, you have to get real about how you're communicating with your market. That's it. That is the secret! Because if you don't know your value inside-out, upside-down and back-to-front, if the story you share about your business doesn't make your soul sing, capture hearts, imaginations and passions, how can you possibly enchant your audience? The answer is, it will be devilishly difficult.

Hire a copywriter. Mwwwahahahahahahahah... (that's ghostly laughter to you and me).

Seriously though, it's one option. Other options include stuff like getting a massive sheet of paper. Scribble down everything you can about your market and your business's value, then put your key points across all your marketing media. A good copywriter of course, will do this for you, helping you find and capture your value in words so you can communicate authentically with those you seek to serve.

Either way, healthy businesses sort their communication. Sort yours too and the rest will follow, which is good to know, because we all deserve to reap the rewards of owning a business, before the grim reaper comes to reap us! Mwwwwwhahahahahahahahahahahahah!
